As the 10th Secretary of the Smithsonian, Mike organized that institution's 150th anniversary celebration, raisedįunds for many projects including the National Museum of the American Indian and managed a controversial exhibit of the Enola Gay. He raised enrollment of underrepresented minorities, established privateįund raising as a campus priority, and led a major reorganization of the biological sciences. In 1974 he became Vice Chancellor and in 1980 Chancellor of the University. Planning at Boalt Hall at The University of California from 1959. Mike taught Property Law and City and Regional Mann in the Bronx, graduated from Dartmouth College (1951) and Yale Law School (1956), served in the Marine Corps and clerked for Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren. Born in New York City in 1930, Mike attended Horace HEYMAN-Ira Michael, Chancellor of the University of California (1980-1990) and Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution (1994-1999) died at his home in Berkeley, CA, on Novemof emphysema.
